Indication
For relief of constipation.
Pharmacodynamic
HLP Raven Enema promotes evacuation of bowel by increasing the bulk volume an water content of stool. It provides thorough cleansing without discomfort or irritation. Saline causes retention of fluid in the bowel. Glycerin helps restore normal bowel function resulting from poor diet or lack of physical exercise. It usually acts within 15 to 30 minutes possibly due to the hygroscopic or osmotic effects; it may also have lubricating and faecal softening actions.
Contraindication
Sensitivity to Sodium Chloride and glycerin when the following medical problems exist: appendicitis; rectal bleeding; congestive heart failure; hypertension; diabetes mellitus; and intestinal obstruction.
Warning and Precaution
For rectal use only. Glycerin administered rectally may produce rectal discomfort in some individuals. Frequent or prolonged use of laxatives may result in dependence. Do not use when nausea, vomiting or abdominal pain is present. It should be used cautiously in dehydrated patients and should not be given to children ( up to 6 years of age ) unless prescribed by doctor. If use results in unusual pain or other side effects, consult a physician.

Side Effects
Adverse effects are primarily due to dehydrating effects of Glycerin. Glycerin when use rectally can cause irritation.
Dose and Administration
Adult : 20 mL, remove cap of squeeze bottle, insert tip inside rectum and empty the enema into the rectum.
Symptoms and Treatment of Overdose
The sign and symptoms would be the exaggeration of the side effects, especially rectal irritation. The frequency of bowel movement would also be increased. Treatment would be the cessation of use of the medication. If the symptoms continues, professional medical advise should be obtained.
